WEAPONS DO NOT EDUCATE, THEY KILL!

“Estudia”, the Education Show which took place from 2nd to 6th April in the Fira de Barcelona, was very well received. It welcomed about 70.000 students who were able to find more than 160 stands there. But, despite the fact that most of the stands were from educational centres, one of the most visited was the Army’s one. Consequently, there are views for and against the presence of this stand.

On the one hand, it is argued that the existence of the stand came in useful to those students who were interested in joining the Army which, after all, it is one more profession. In addition, it is also claimed that nowadays the main purpose of the Army is to assure the worldwide peace, that is why becoming a soldier is winning popularity between young people, every day more and more.

On the other hand, “Desmilitaritzem l’Educació”, the campaign starred by some Catalan NGOs and institutions, whose postulate is presented in their website http://www.edualter.org/campanya.htm, strikes back. They believe that the mission of these institutions is to promote the culture and the coexisting values so, for this reason, they consider the Army’s stand as inadmissible. So that, they ask the Generalitat to ban the Army’s invitation on the following Education Shows. Moreover, they protest against the propaganda the youth received, which created an idyllic image of the military way of life, without considering their role such defenders of economic and geopolitical interests.

To sum up, the Army’s stand has created a lot of controversy. Personally, I think it is not bad to inform people about the Army as a profession. However, what I refuse to defend is the idea of the Army as a way of education or a sort of an NGO because, from my point of view, there is neither Army nor troop for PEACE.

Weapons do not educate, they kill !

Excellent piece of writing. Wonderful topic for debate! I guess I'll pinpoint it in class today.

You are right! I've read you and you write so beautifully that I just skipped my comments.

Here they are:
- after all, IT is ONE MORE profession.

-propose (CHECK NOUN SPELLLING!!)

-to promote the culture and the
COEXISTING values

That's all worth mentioning.

Please, forgive me if I am too strong. But I have to be confident. First of all I have to say that I'm not keen on wars beacuse our civil war killed my grandfather so I couldn't meet him. But I know some soldiers and they are not as bad people as the society think. Most of them are in the Army to help people so I do defend them because they are not well-seen by normal people.

Besides, for good or for bad,we have to admit we need them.
